I assume that the scale of salary for the Assistant

Auditors will be as recommended by the Retrenchment Committed

£420 to £540, with increments corresponding to those of other

officers with similar scales (i.e. £40 triennially). In

this connection it is necessary to consider the position of

Mr:R.F.Brayn, the present Assistant Auditor. Mr:Brayn was appointed to Hong Kong on the 14th April 1906 at a salary of £300, by £10 annually, to £400, and is now therefore receiv- ing £340 per annum. I would suggest that he might be allowed to draw salary at the minimum of the new scale (£420) from the date when Mr:Phelips resumes his full salary and when, in consequence, he ceases to draw his present acting allow-
